In 1939, during the Sino-Japanese war, Nishi Sakura, a nurse in the Japanese Imperial Army, is transferred to the military hospital in Tien-Tsin, at a time when the Japanese are experiencing heavy losses. Working in the operating room of the head surgeon, Dr Okabe, and witness to countless amputations, she is constantly confronted with horrors. As one of the rare women in the place, she finds herself an object of desire for the soldiers who know they don’t have long to live. The very first night, she is raped by a group of men «led» by the soldier Sakamoto who is about to die. She accompanies Dr. Okabe to the front to an small abandoned fort. Surprised that he has not tried to seduce her, she discovers his secret : ever since becoming impotent, he has been addicted to morphine. The night before the final attack, she ties him to his bed while he his having withdrawal symptoms and succeeds in curing him of his impotence. The bastion is pulverized by bombs. She, alone, survives and finds the corpse of her most recent lover : angel of love, she is nonetheless surrounded by death.
