In the village of Amanda Lundju, every time a child is born a tree is planted. The trees grow along with the children, outgrow them, outlive them and become the villagers’ souls. But day after day, trees are eut down for the villagers’ survival. And wood becomes a rarity. Eventually drought and death set in. When Dou the nomad comes back from the savannah, his twin brother Hami has just died. Tension is at its highest in the village. What did he die of? What evil is gnawing Amanda Lundju? Dou must take his dead twin’s place to be with his wife and daughter. Sally, the young woman he was supposed to marry, becomes crazy and falls in love with the sun. When the big city’s foresters come to the village, it’s mayhem. Calacalado, the old sorcerer, orders the villagers to flee. They go all the way to the desert on an initiation journey. The birth of a child will take them back to the village so that they can plant a tree.
