The duplicitous and powerful eunuch Tsao wages a merciless war against his rivals. Two hostage children serve as bait to entice all Tsao’s enemies to the Dragon Inn, a thugs’ haunt where the inn’s own guests are served up as food. An improbable and perverse remake King Hu’s master-piece (signed by Raymond Lee, made with Ching Siu-tung and Tsui Hark, uncredited), this New Dragon Inn unites a trio of exceptional actors at the outset of their careers: Maggie Cheung, Brigitte Lin and Tony Leung Ka-fai. The film creates a daring combination of the traditions of the American Western and the Chinese wu xia pan. MM
