After arriving in a mountain village, Dongho converses with the innkeeper. On hearing a pansori song, a popular form of traditional Korean music, he reminisces about his childhood: after losing his mother very young, he was brought up by a pansori musiscian. The musician, his adopted daughter Bongwha and Dongho travel round the country, singing to those who love the genre. After a quarrel, Dongho runs away from home, leaving Bongwha with her father who, fearing solitude and intent on her following his tradition, blinds her…
