The Wife of Seishu Hanaoka
(Hanaoka Seishû no tsuma)

while her husband, Seishu, pursues his medical studies in another city, Kae lives with her mother-in-law for whom she has great admiration. When he finishes his studies and returns home, Seishu does research on anesthetics. The relationship between Kae and her mother-in-law has soured. She and her mother-in-law both ask Seishu to experiment on them with the anesthetic he has discovered. Kae loses her sight as a result of this experiment, but Seishu’s work is, at long last, crowned with success. Her mother-in-law dies and Kae is able to finish her life peacefully with her husband.
