A woman and three men try their luck in the big city. In search of happiness, they find some joy, love and death. Luisa goes to Rio to live a new life, where she meets her former fiancé, a vaquero in his homeland, but now a bandit. He hides what he has become from her, but has to flee. She has to manage on her own, but soon finds herself under the “protection” of another man. Jasao, the former vaquero, a bandit wanted by the police, is eventually caught. Calunga, the unemployed man who “protects” Luisa, then lets her down. Ignacio, with whom Luisa then lives and who respects her, protects her and even follows her when she tries to join Jasao, who is being hunted by the police.
“A Grande Cidade, without any intention on my part, was a circumstantial film, extremely linked to the political and emotional atmosphere of the time when it was released in cinemas.” Carlos Diegues
