In the early 17th century, the legendary ninja Sasuke Sarutobi is caught up in an inextricable web of political intrigue, ploys and espionage. He is tasked by his master, Lord Sanada, to help him choose sides in the final combat being prepared.
First an assistant to Ozu, Shinoda heads into the 1960s as a director and, like Oshima and Imamura, joins the Japanese New Wave. Although a genre film, Samurai Spyis nonetheless a political film and finely-tuned metaphor of Japan’s situation in the 1950s.JB
