Traver, a black clarinettist, arrives at a little island south of the United States. He is on the run, suspected of raping a white woman. The musician, who is both brutal and tender at the same time, fascinates a 14-year-old girl, who is in the charge of Miller, the guardian of the island. A group of racists want to lynch the black man, but a protestant pastor stops them. Miller, to cover up for having seduced the young girl, accepts to collaborate with the pastor and the young girl to help Traver leave the island.
