To avoid a scandal and save her family’s and her own name, a high-born woman entrusts her illegitimate child to a servant. Written by the readily anarchistic José González Castillo, a playwright, theatre director, tango lyricist and founder of the Popular University of Boedo, José Agustín Ferreyra’s film eludes all naturalist leanings and confines the bourgeoisie it portrays to a studio staging akin to an over-tight garment that reveals everything it is supposed to hide. An authentic popular melodrama, the subtly ill-tailored cut of The Law They Forgot heightens its ironic verve. JB
