At the time when supporters of the ruling Tokugawas are warring with the troops of the emperor, Otose, the strong-minded owner of an inn, is in conflict with ber overly demanding mother-in-law and her unfaithful husband. Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the emperor’s leaders, is being chased by the shogun police and happens to take refuge at Otose’s inn. Oryo, Otose’s adopted daughter, skillfully manages to cover for the escape of Ryoma, who falls in love with the young girl. Shortly after that, the family learns that Ryoma Sakamoto has been killed.
