During the 1971 war between West Pakistan and East Pakistan (which will become Bangladesh), in a remote village by the river Modhumati, Motaleb Mollah, a rich landlord and local leader, cooperates with the marauding Pakistani army. After his elder brother’s death, Motaleb marries his sister-in-law who had a son, Bachchu, from his brother. Amulya Chakrabarty, an idealist Brahmin teacher in the village, has some influence over young Bachchu. The teacher also has a widowed daughter, Shanti. When the war breaks out, Bachchu watches a genocide perpetrated by the Pakistani soldiers. He decides to join the Bengalee guerillas fighting the Pakistani army. The experiences of a bitter war shatter Bachchu’s world of innocence.
