The chronicle of a village in southern China that follows a family over several seasons, narrated by A Qiu, the eldest 12-year old daughter. The grandmother’s death in charge of the raising her grand children will require parents who were away working on building sites in town to move back to the village and take care of the rice fields. At the breaking point between tradition and modernism, the young A Qiu decides that one day she will become a writer… The Rice Paddy is the first film ever to be shot entirely in Dong language (language Tibeto-Burman). Xiaoling Zhu only worked with non-professional actors but real villagers.
