Genésio lives in the fictitious town of Aroeiras. Retired and a widower without relatives he tries to escape his loneliness by drinking and talking about the good old times, when Lampião and his gang defied the powerful landowners. Baltazar, his companion and political leader of the peasants, does not believe in myths of the past. He supports armed struggle as the only possible way to solve problems.
In the small town, the authorities are the objects of mockery during popular games and festivals. The cunning elite attempts to control the rural syndicate. From time to time, the prophetess Delfina appears, foretelling the coming of a man who shall restore justice and order.
