The Eldest Daughter
(Loku Duwa)

by Sumitra PERIES

Punna is the pretty eldest daughter of the Palihawadana family. She assists her mother in ail househod chores, does a typing course in order to obtain a job and supports her family. She meets Marasinghe, a rich businessman, who falls for her. But Punna is in love with Wickrama, a young and tactful man. Contrary to an age-old tradition, Wickrama meets Punna’s parents to propose to marry their daughter. His sincerity attracts the old couple and he also wins the heart of Punna’s brother and sisters. But Wickrama manages to obtain the dowry money in advance from the father. The latter suddenly dies of a heart attack. Punna does not take long to realise Wickrama’s duplicity. With the help of Peshala, an old schoolfriend, Punna finds a job and starts supporting the family by herself…
