The son of Shandong peasants at the end of the 19th century, Wu Xun was too poor to study and remained illiterate. After an unscrupulous owner robbed him of his few possessions which led him to become a beggar, Wu Xun promised to set up free schools where poor children would learn how to defend themselves against the wealthy’s harassment. With patiently collected charity money, Wu Xun managed to open three schools.
