Darlene had escaped her home village with her baby for a wedding that never took place. Many years later, she goes back home as a single mother, in a sun- drenched Brazilian province where time seems to stand still. Old Osias proposes to her. Destitute and alone, she agréés. A hard worker, Darlene does everything, leaving her husband to his pathological idleness. When he gives shelter to his cousin Zezinho, Darlene gets attached to the newcomer and becomes pregnant. The strange family lives on a day-to-day basis. Darlene tries to manage between the men she meets and the children they leave behind. When young and handsome Ciro appears, things get even more complicated.
