The old horsekeeper’s children have long left home for the city. The old man does everything he can to keep his youngest son with him in the mountains, not out of some father’s whim but to teach him the old horsekeeping trade.

Along the pastures, a road is being built. “Iron horses”, i.e. cars and trucks, already use it. With a heavy heart, the old man lets his last son go to study in the city
