In llth Century Andalusia, in the flower of Islamic-Iberian culture, Hassan is learning Arabie calligraphy from a grand master. In épisodes along the Unes of “A Thousand and One Nights” the film tells of Hassan’s search for part of a lost manuscript, and 60 Arabian lessons on love in its infinite varieties. Losing his way between dream and reality, Hassan finds himself ever more under the spell of the Princess of Samarkand, whose portrait on the slightly burnt page of a book he jealously guards. Fanaticism, a struggle for power, and decadence undermine the secretive garden of Paradise which nourishes the love of the two young people.
