Xiaodou, a 25-year-old young introverted man, works in a post office in Beijing. One day, he is informed by the head of the post office that he will be given a new job of delivering mail to Xingfu, the “Zone of Happiness” in replacement of a postman, who has just been fired for unknown reasons. There he meets an old man who tells him that the former postman was arrested because he was caught reading the letters of almost everyone in the Zone. An unnamed fear begins to settle in Xiaodou’s mind. Xiaodou becomes acquainted with Yunqing, a young quiet girl in charge of stamping the mail. She is used to amusing herself and others by guessing the letter’s contents from the handwriting and the kinds of envelopes used. As if drawn by some unknown desire, Xiaodou starts reading the mail of the people in the Zone. He discovers that the woman in Block.2 is actually a prostitute who operates from her flat, that a young man sends a last letter to his parents before he commits suicide and that a homosexual has a secret admiration for the young man in Block. 4. Driven by a sense of righteousness and a determination to redress the wrongs of society, Xiaodou starts interfering with these people’s lives…
