Chiu wants to quite his mafia milieu and become a master chef. But he ends up as an assistant chef in a large restaurant owned by the Au family. He falls under the charm of his boss’ daughter, the flighty and extravagant Ka-wai, and decides to help her keep the family business afloat when it comes under threat from a formidable Mongol chef. Together they have to find the very best chef, one who will ensure that they win the challenge of the Imperial Feast. In this popular film, joyful from beginning to end (rather rare for Tsui Hark, who loves turning our emotions upside down), the filmmaker has great fun in combining an action film and cookery film using visual and sound puns. Watch out for your eyes and taste buds ! MM
