I was 16 when The King and His Movie was released. I was making my debut in film-making and this was the first feature film I saw out of my own initiative. I was enthralled by the plot, the characters, Patagonia and the film’s atmosphere. Also, the story was the shooting of a film, something I was beginning to feel obsessed with. Several years later when I decided to shoot in Patagonia, I still had very vivid memories and sensations about this film.
I only saw it again recently as part of this programme. I enjoyed if for different reasons: passing references to the varions trades of film-making, the mise en scène, the way Aurélie Antoine de Tounens’s story is told and, above all, the description of the complications of the shooting, something I had to confront myself.
