Kikuji’s grand-mother and mother tyranically run a tabi (traditional shoes) shop. They force Kikuji to repudiate his wife and stop him from remarrying. He leads a debauched life until the day when the shop is destroyed during the bombing of the city in 1945. His grand-mother commits suicide. Kikuji decides to start the shop again although he is now over sixty and tabis are out of fashion.
