In 1495, at the age of nineteen, Yeonsan becomes the tenth ruler of the Choson dynasty. Three months after mounting the throne, he learns of documents concerning his mother, Queen Yon, who was dethroned and poisoned. He is torn between his princely obligations and filial duty, and his reign becomes marked by merciless purges of neo-Confucian intellectuals and a strong hostility to Buddhist rites.
