Our Choices is not the diary of a revolution, neither is it a chronicle of wartime events. The film follows the thread of an individual resolution – shared with others – to remain a loyal “son” and bear witness to one’s country at war. How do you decide whether to stay or leave, and what are the consequences of these two decisions? Karim Serjieh retraces the collapse of a reality, the nightmarish shock on receiving a piece of news and, amidst all that, how to avoid one’s own collapse when facing paternity in a situation of utter chaos. Yet, honest and clear-sighted, the film uses this overtly personal dimension to find a sort of universal key to understanding the tragedy specific to this Syrian conflict or any other experience of destruction.
