Tokyo, 1912. Shinzo Katsuragi leads a agitated life on account of his sister who works as a prostitute. He is grateful to her, but feels ashamed and decides to move away. One day, in a brothel, he meets a woman named Kiyoba, who reminds him of his sister, and falls in love with ber. Kiyoba has been supporting her husband, Dengo, ever since he lost his fortune. She has a rival, a geisha named Otaka, who works in another brithel. Kiyoba manages to convince Dengo to break off with Otaka, but she also intends to seduce Shinzo. One evening, a fire breaks out in Kiyoba ‘s house. Dengo realizes that his little daughter is inside. In a desperate attempt to save her, he jumps into the flames. Otaka arrives and, in a burst of rage, kills Dengo. After that, she poisons herself in the presence of Shinzo and Kiyoba.
