Loan, a young woman from Hanoi, teaches at a school in a southern Vietnamese town. Hung, one of her colleagues’ brother, leads an idle life even though he has a wife and children to support. Despite his love for Loan, he escapes to a foreign country. While back in her home town during a holiday, Loan receives a visit from Tuan, an old school friend. In contrast with his former self he is now obsessed with economics and finds a position in a company in Saigon. Three years pass. Loan is married to Tuan and leads an empty life. One day, Hung, now known as Vincent Nyugen, returns to Vietnam on business. He discovers that the wife of the man he is doing business with is Loan. Unable to bear her life with her husband any longer, Loan returns to Hanoi and resumes her teaching job. Her husband traces her and visits her at her school but the couple have grown too far apart and are unable to live together again…
