Albert, a young doctor, administers to the poor people in a Mexican village, helping them to fight ignorance and superstition as well as supporting them in their struggle against the powerful caciques. He falls in love with Soledad, one of the local women. But Soledad is raped by another man and is obliged to marry him. She and her child die in childbirth. Her husband is killed by a gunshot. The doctor decides to leave the village.
