Three strange horsemen go to the railway station in Hadleyville, a small town where former sheriff Kane’s wedding is being celebrated. The rumour has it that Frank Miller, whom Kane had sent to prison, is coming to settle accounts. Kane could leave, which his non-violent wife tries to persuade him to do. Yet Kane wants to confront Miller. Everybody deserts the former sheriff; Kane must face Miller alone when he gets off the train with his three killers. Kane eventually wins, with the help of his wife. When the locals gather to congratulate him, Kane throws his star insigna in the dust and leaves with his wife.
