Mexico in 1914. Margarita, deceived and abandoned by her husband, is thrown out of her house by her father. After doing all sorts of odd jobs, she goes to the capital where her son, Margarito is born. Four years later, she is working in a brothel where she meets General Juan Gomez who asks her to marry him.
One day he is arrested as he is coming out of the theater. It turns out he is an imposter, in fact the murderer of a real general. The imposter is killed and Margarita considered to be his accomplice is sentenced to eight years in prison. When she is liberated, she goes to find her son, but does not dare reveal her real identity for fear of compromising his future. Margarita resumes a life of vice. She sends stolen money to the orphanage in order for Margarito to become a lawyer. The years pass and one day she goes to see her son in court, where he has become a successful lawyer. Mistaking her for a beggar, Margarito gives her alms.
