Feng comes from the White Camel Mountain. Raised
by his brother, bis ambition has always been to become a past master in the art of handling the sword. Between the woman he loves and martial arts, he prefers martial arts. Broken-hearted, the woman marries his brother. After ten years in exile, Feng settles in the desert and opens an inn.Yaoshi also made a mess of his love life. He experienced a short and impossible passion with his best friend’s wife, in Peach Blossom Land. Every year at the blossoming season, he visits Feng and has a drink with him. Then he goes and visits the woman Feng used to love, on the White Camel Mountain. Later Yaoshi meets Yang, a strange man, and his sister Yin…

“There is an important difference between Ashes of Time and my previous films. In the latter, I usually started the shoot simply with the beginning of a story, or certain characters, resolving their trajectory to the end of the film during the shooting time.
With Ashes of Time, I already knew the fate of my characters before I started, and I couldn’t change anything. This induced a certain fatalism, both in me and in the whole movie.”
