In Colombia, from the second half of the 19th Century, the two traditional political parties, Liberals and Conservatives, have fought each other in a series of civil wars that have shed the country’s blood for almost a century. The last of them is known as the “The Violence”. It began with the assassination of a popular politician on 9 April 1948. This day opened up years of darkness during which political killers played a leading role. They are called the “Pajaros” (birds), the most notorious being León María Lozano dubbed “the Condor”. A henchman of the Conservative party, this Catholic fanatic ravaged by asthma organised the systematic elimination of Liberals in his region.
