Asher, an impulsive young man, works in the small scaffolding business run by his father Milo, for whom he has the utmost respect. Asher is also in his final school year with a turbulent class and half-heartedly preparing for his baccalaureate. His encounter with Rami, an atypical literature teacher who prefers dialogue with his students to other forms of teaching shakes up his relationship to learning. Growing aware of his inner existential questions, he begins to take his education seriously. He then finds himself torn between the fear of disappointing his father, who looks on schooling with an unfavourable eye, and the need for freedom. The day Rami disappears, Asher loses his bearings: who can now help him to put words on what drives him and, above all, on what disturbs him? Matan Yair’s debut feature is inspired by his experience of teaching remedial students, one of whom was the striking Asher Lax, who here plays a role close to his own story. With the camera always tight on him and with great finesse and a certain intensity, Scaffolding sheds light on the possible futures awaiting a young adult. CA
