In Cuba in 1930, Fenner, an American, joins docker Guillermo and an underground group to fight the dictatorship. He is helped by China VAldes whose brother was killed by policeman Ariete. The group is planning to kill a ministr and then to blow up his grave as officials will gather for his funeral. The bomb attack is supposed to trigger the rising. They dig a tunnel from China’s house to the grave. The politician is killed but buried at another place. Ariete bas China’s house besieged: he suspects China to have some responsibility in the bomb attack. Fenner gets killed. The rising starts at last.
As in some of his other films, Huston examines the theme of failure in this well-crafted, although wordy and naive film.
