Xiaodong and Xiaochun are lovers who study painting at a Beijing art school. After graduation, they stay in the school to work as tutors and make a little money by selling their paintings. Life gets monotonous. They both know their relationship is coming to an end, but neither wants to talk about it.
Xiaochun secretly starts to make arrangements with a man in New York and plans to emigrate there. When Xiaodong discovers the plans, he doesn’t ask any questions. Xiaochun then tells him she is pregnant. He suggests an abortion which she accepts. Later, they spend a quiet vacation in the countryside. After returning to the city, Xiaochun is still determined to emigrate. Xiaodong is heartbroken…
