In this road movie headed for Hokkaido Island, Kinya crosses paths with Akemi, a reserved young woman, and offers to give her a lift. The duo is soon joined by Yusaku, freshly released from prison and on the look-out for an opportunity to rebuild his life.
A road-movie without any real adventures, The Yellow Handkerchief was a huge box-office hit in Japan. Yamada once again shows his mastery in the way he brings his characters to life on screen (including the ever-brilliant Chieko Baisho, and Ken Takakura) and unfolds their story much like life passing by.
