Basheer, a well-known writer who fights for the independence of India, has been jailed for over a year without a trial. He goes on a hunger strike to demand a proper trial, and is sentenced to two and a half years. His modesty and sincerity win him many friends and he adjusts quickly to prison life.
One day, word arrives that ail the political prisoners are to be freed, except for Basheer, who is left alone. Desperate and frustrated, he roams aimlessly around the prison. Suddenly a woman’s voice comes to him from the other side of the wall that separates the men from the women. A new life begins for Basheer. He developes a close relationship with this woman, despite the insurmountable barrier of the wall. They finally arrange to meet in the prison hospital, but on the very day they are supposed to meet, Basheer is finally set free.
