Bissau is a constantly evolving town dominated by the fear of dismissal and unemployment. Yonta, a young girl, silently loves Vincente, a friend of her parents’ and a former hero of his country’s struggle for independence. Vincente will never be aware of the passion he has aroused and Yonta will never learn about Zé’s feelings for her, a young man from the waterfront who sends her anonymous love letters. The shadow of Nando, a disenchanted hero from a past war, runs through this story where only the happy children of Bissau go through life unscathed, bearers of hope for the future.
