The film revolves around the theme of greed: four brothers fight over the ownership of a family plot of land. The eldest brother takes it and is thinking of marrying to have an heir. A poor woman is caught up in the conflict: she wants to escape poverty by marrying a man who can guarantee her a peaceful family life. These four brothers live in the heart of Cairo, where the conflict of interests becomes a matter of life and death.
“Why did I turn to filmmaking? I can’t find a precise answer… Do you ask someone why they drink? Why do they eat? I want to realise my vision. I’m not concerned with adding anything new to the language of film. My sole aim is to convey my feelings using very simple language on the filmstrip… The simplicity of poems… I am a little pupil looking out of the window at an admirable and pretty garden called Bergman.” Raafat El Mihi
