Alloune, who works as a guide at Gorée’s Slave Museum in Senegal, goes looking for his ancestors’ descendants in the USA. This journey leads him from old plantations in South Carolina to the Little Senegal area of Harlem, where he meets African immigrants and Afro-Americans absorbed by their troubled lives, themselves susceptible to a form of racism. Transmission collides with the taboo of deportation from Africa and sentimental Alloune strives to create a bridge between the two continents, just as Rachid Bouchareb (who made Days of Glory in 2006) works towards confronting a society’s ills with it’s buried memory.
