Ann Hui’s cinema has often been interested in the complexity of the relationships women develop between themselves, depending on cultural, historical and social determinations. This line runs more or less ostentatiously throughout her œuvre. A story of initiation, Love After Love is among the films of hers in which this dramatic element is the most obvious. Returning to 1940s Shanghai, at a junction between two of Eileen Chang’s short stories. The script was written by the writer Wang Anyi – from Shanghai herself – with whom Ann Hui had already collaborated for a play created in Hong Kong in 2009. JB
