Two 20-year-old men are rolling up joints in a small flat in Alma-Ata. Later, one of them is sleeping with a girl. Hi mother wakes them up and lectures her son “You must work to make a living” He replies “One needs courage to live” ans then goes back to his bedroom to spend his time listening to an Italian opera melody sung by Maria Callas, played on an old tape recorder.
One scene after the other, the young man’s actions are described throughout one summer, he meets friends, mainly women, and has important and trivial conversations.
