A black gardener walks around a white district looking for work. He discovers that another black man also wants to be hired and so he ruins his rival’s chances by accusing him of theft. The actor Athol Fugard, born of an Irish father and Afrikaner mother, is South Africa’s best-known white playwright. His theatre work is marked by a double culture. During the apartheid of the 1960s and 1970s, his theatre was one of protest and he became the white director of black actors, using his art to challenge and denounce the social system.
