Sentenced for witchcraft, a young girl is banished from her society. Only an old leper loves her; he had once saved her when she was about to be sacrificed to the spirits. She discovers love with a young man who escaped as he was being taken to prison. They live together, she becomes pregnant. One day, the young man is arrested when trying to enter the village, looking for food. The woman dies while giving birth, but before dying she puts a burning wooden stick on her child’s chest to erase the “devil’s mark”, a hereditary mark she also bears and which is the cause of ail her trouble. The child is taken in by the midwife while the old leper dies in his burning hut.
