In the early sixties, the murder of João Pedro Teixeira, a peasant leader, was ordered by the Nordeste land owners. The making of a film on his life, with the farmers as themselves, was stopped by the 1964 military coup. Seventeen years later, in 1981, the film-maker resumed his project and started looking for his widow, Elizabeth Teixeira, and her ten children scattered by the crackdown that followed the assassination.
