Le Mirage
(Maya Miriga)

by Nirad N. MOHAPATRA

This is the gradual and irreversible disintegration of a large middle-class family living under the same roof in a small town in the state of Orissa. Raj Kishore Babu, the elderly headmaster of a secondary school, lives modestly with his wife and five children. Tuku, the eldest, who is a lecturer, is quiet and submissive. Prabha, Tuku’s wife, is expecting her first child; she is a woman who devotes her life to her home. Tutu, the second son, is the family’s hope. After studying at university in Delhi, he is waiting for an important position as a civil servant. The third son, Bulu, lacks self-confidence and suffers from an inferiority complex despite the encouragement of his brother Tutu. The fourth son, Tulu, is a daring boy who challenges the family’s traditional norms. Tikina, the youngest, is studying at secondary school. The gentle and wise grandmother is the heart of the family, but it is Raj Kishore Babu who sets the rules at home. When Prabha gives birth to a daughter, the family is disappointed. However, Tutu’s appointment to a prestigious post brings joy to the family. Thanks to his position, he marries a woman from a social background above his own, which marks the beginning of the family’s disintegration…

“The conflict between past, present and future, parents and children, urban and rural life, men and women, the traditional and the modern, all these subjects are dealt with in this film. How can a film close so much? Maya Miriga does, and it does so with the wisdom demanded of such a vast subject.” Saeed Mirza
