María José, 25 year old, is several months pregnant and no one knows… Without ever naming the exact psychological reason why this troubling (and fascinating) character denies her pregnancy, Medea very subtly evokes the diffuse conservatism of Costa Rican society. Neither does it directly reveal the social and religious context of the country, where abortion is illegal, as it is in many Latin American countries. Alexandra Latishev Salazar does not so much give priority to filming consequences regardless of causes. Instead, through a raw and critical prism, she succeeds in showing that, here, the causes are plain to see, whereas the consequences are silenced. MM
