I, Your Mother is the portrait of a very surrounded solitude, that of a Senegalese student living in one of Europe’s big cities. The film takes place here and there. Here, in this studio where the student struggles to study, and elsewhere in the pictures that cover the walls. Here in this cold city where we follow the student to the odd jobs that eat away at his time and elsewhere in his home country that, in a thousand ways, reminds herself to him, calling him to return. Present here and there, absent everywhere, the student is in a situation that I, Your Mother astutely seeks to determine, crowning Safi Faye’s deftness in using different means, documentary and fictional, to shape her subject.
