Money, Money!

1989 saw two comedies meet with huge success at the Vietnamese box-office. Dich Cuoi by Do Minh Tuan and Money Money!, recently restored to its true value. If the cast was largely responsable for bringing in the audiences (Trinh Thinh, Nguyen Nhu Quynh, Dang Tat Binh), what is most surprising here is the corrosive spirit and the freedom of tone. Focusing on a household of men made up of a veteran soldier father, an elder brother working for a private company and a younger brother who has returned from abroad with a PhD in nuclear energy under his belt, Money Money! makes fun of their little ploys and their greed at a time of society’s structural adaptation to an economy nobody really seems prepared fo.
