This debut feature by the young director Yoon Dan-bi was one of the surprises to come out of Korea in 2020. But why so? In fact, we very quickly get the feeling that we are on familiar ground when a divorced and penniless father decides to spend summer with his 17-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son at their grandfather’s house. What’s more, it seems like a good idea, as their newly divorced aunt decides to do the same. With a delicate vignette portrayal of the daily life of a family in the process of recomposing itself, Moving On demonstrates a cleverly balanced skill. Yoon Dan-bi’s mise-en-scène and work with the actors are of fundamental relevance when each emotion (joy, anxiety, resentment and suffering) enters the dance that keeps this little world on its feet.
