In December, 1986, in Alma-Ata, the capital of Kazakhstan, the police and army brutally suppressed a demonstration of students protesting against the policies of the central government. By sheer coincidence, 17 year-old Sanjar happened to be in the city’s main square during the démonstration. He is being sought by the secret police. He flees and finally finds refuge with Zina, an old German woman, who lives in a remote railway station. Zina herself is an outcast, having been persecuted during the Stalinist purges of 1937. A warm natural friendship develops between Zina and Sanjar.
